Update
HEIDELBERG NEWS - The Western Cape Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment Working on Fire (WoF) Programme, in its preparation for the coming summer fire season, launched a fire awareness campaign.
As part of the programme it is hosting a series of fire awareness education outreaches to communities in fire-prone areas in the province.
The campaign launch, which included stakeholders from GCIS, Cape Nature, Overberg District Municipality, University of Stellenbosch and Waterfund, was held on 13 October to coincide with the International Day of Risk reduction.
Now workshops and door-to-door visits are helping communities take preventative measures to protect themselves from veld fires.
“Following the devastating fires that swept across the Overberg communities over the past fire season, the communities that were identified surround conservation land and have also been identified as hotspot areas for the 2020/21 summer fire season,” said WoF’s Community Fire Awareness officer Rayganah Rhoda.
A total of 3 000 community members, identified by FPA, the district municipality and Disaster Management and 50 schools are being reached.
The following topics will be taught in the schools:
- Safety inside and around house (Grade 7-10)
- Stop, Drop and Roll (Grade R-3)
- Crawl low under smoke (Grade R-3)
- Impacts of fire (Grade 3-7)
