NATIONAL NEWS - Disaster management teams have been deployed across the OR Tambo District Municipality in the Eastern Cape to assess damage caused by heavy rains that have affected several communities and disrupted access to essential services.
The municipality said teams were on the ground identifying affected households, assessing the extent of the damage and determining the immediate needs of communities impacted by the adverse weather.
The assessment process is ongoing, with a comprehensive update on the damage and planned interventions expected once the information has been consolidated.
“We remain committed to coordinating disaster response efforts, working with relevant stakeholders and ensuring that the needs of affected communities are identified and addressed,” the municipality said in a statement.
Several areas affected
Among the affected areas is Mganduli, where significant disruption resulted in access to the town being closed on Tuesday.
Other affected communities include Buntingville and Nggleni, as well as Green Farms in the Port St Johns Local Municipality.
Several communities around Qumbu and Tolo, in the King Sabata Dalindyebo Local Municipality, have also been affected.
The municipality has urged residents to remain vigilant while wet weather conditions persist.
Communities have been warned against crossing flooded rivers and low-lying bridges, where strong currents and rising water levels can pose a serious safety risk.
Disaster management teams will continue assessing the situation to establish the extent of the damage and identify the assistance required by affected communities. - Source: SAnews.gov.za
