HESSEQUA NEWS - Distracted driving remains one of the leading causes of crashes and horrific collisions on the province's roads.
Minister of Transport and Public Works, Donald Grant stated that brain activity in the areas that process moving images decreases by over 33% when a driver is talking on the phone. "This means that we effectively become partially blind when we use our cellphone while driving."
As part of 'Safely home'-efforts to curb this trend the #ItCanWait advertisement, which highlights the dangers of being on the phone while driving. The advertisement can be viewed on the Safely Home YouTube channel. The campaign is a creative concept created by the Western Cape Government.
Grant explained that they hope that the campaign will speak directly to motorists, urging them not to use their phones while driving. "Research has shown that distracted driving can be as dangerous as driving under the influence of alcohol or intoxicating substances."
