STILBAAI NEWS - The wildfire that initially broke out in Melkhoutfontein last week reignited yesterday afternoon,14 December due to strong winds.
Firefighters worked tirelessly to bring it under control by the evening, followed by mopping-up operations earlier today, 15 December.
Despite these efforts, strong winds caused the fire to flare up again in two major areas. The blaze is now burning beyond the control of firefighters. While no structures are currently under threat, there remains a risk to nearby properties if conditions worsen.
On a positive note, cooler temperatures and light drizzles are helping to slow the fire’s progress through the dense vegetation. The fire is currently spreading in a northeast direction.
The firefighting effort has been a collaborative one, involving GRDM Fire & Rescue Services, Hessequa Municipality Fire and Rescue Services, Working on Fire, SCFPA, local farmers, and GRDM Fire Volunteers in Hessequa.
If you spot a wildfire, please report it immediately by contacting the GRDM Emergency Call Centre at 044 805 5071 or sending a WhatsApp message to 081 709 5193.
