GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - Over two dozen Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM) firefighters today, 18 February, battled wildfires side-by-side with Mossel Bay Municipal Firefighters near Vleesbay after a fire broke out on a farm.
The fire originated on a dumping site and was fueled by hot weather conditions and wind gusts.
GRDM subsequently deployed a chopper to bomb the wildfire for two hours. Firefighting operations have been a great success, because no lives were lost and all buildings were protected.
Mossel Bay Firefighters and Garden Route Firefighters were also assisted by various farmers and farm workers in the area.
At the moment the wildfire is contained and crews on the ground are busy with mopping-up operations while monitoring the area for flare-ups will continue throughout the night until tomorrow.
