STILBAAI NEWS - The Hessequa Association for Archaeology will be hosting a final lecture for the year.
The lecture will take place on 15 December at the Committee Room of the Community Centre in Stilbaai at 17:30. Belinda Gordon has accepted an invitation to deliver a lecture on the events in and around Colesberg during the Anglo-Boer War.
In her own words, she was stimulated to study these events as follows: "When I came to Colesberg in 1985, the fascinating, virtually unknown Anglo-Boer War memorabilia and sites I discovered there inspired me to begin researching and recording my findings.
"My initial research revealed that although Colesberg became the Southern Front on the 14th February 1900, the Boer victories that took place there were pushed into the background because they were overshadowed by yet more British defeats taking place on other fronts at the same time".
The preliminary programme for early next year includes the following talks:
- 6 January: Suffolk's defeated at Colesberg coincided with the Boer attack at Caesar's Camp and Wagon Hill Ladysmith.
- 14 - 15 February : General De la Rey's forces drove almost 8 000 British forces advancing on Colesberg back to Arundel where they had started from three months previously on the same day that General French relieved Kimberley.
- 27 – 28 February: General Clement's troops marched into Colesberg on the day General Buller, on his 4th attempt, relieved Ladysmith.
