WITSAND NEWS - In celebration of Port Beaufort's 200 years of historical legacy, the Explorers Festival is set to take place from Friday 29 September until Monday 2 October.
Port Beaufort is known by many as a spectacular little coastal village on the edge of the Breede River mouth, just an hour's drive from Swellendam.
With a packed program of adventure sports and family fun, the local Witsand NSRI Station 33 will be providing crucial medical backup for the Witsand Whale Mountain Bike race, the Witsand Explore Trail Run and the Pili Pili Whale of a Race Stand Up Paddle boarding event.
"A portion of proceeds from each of these events will go to NSRI Station 33," said Amanda Dixon, festival organiser.
"We're hugely grateful to Theo Erasmus, the station commander, and his team. They have dedicated a large amount of time and assistance to the planning efforts and their support of these events is crucial to the success thereof."
In addition to support for the sports activities, the crew will also be hosting two fundraising events as part of the festivities; the NSRI Spit Braai on Saturday 30 September and the Dune Dash on Sunday 1 October.
To keep the children entertained, the NSRI will host a Dune Dash on the Witsand main beach on Sunday afternoon, a baton relay style race for ages 6-16.
For the active water lovers, there is the Whale of a Race and for terrestrial sportsmen and women, two trail run routes will take runners through the historical village and along some beautifully scenic single track.
Those who love to explore, tour and be adventurous can compete in the two-day fun family treasure hunt with a twist.
Other activities will include a pub quiz hosted by the Lower Breede River Conservancy, a craft boutique market, an inter-club league bowls tournament, sheep dog demos and lots more.
So, if you are looking for an adventure packed weekend for your family to start the spring holidays in the Overberg, head over to Witsand/Port Beaufort for the festival and join in the celebration of the region's heritage.
