Update
HESSEQUA NEWS - Cansa Relay for Life Riversdale, together with Community Animal Rescue Society (Cars) brings you a Bark for Life fundraising project for dogs and people who are cancer survivors on Saturday 14 October.
The Bark for Life event is the ideal opportunity for owner and dog to honor the special relationship they share in their fight against cancer and at the same time bringing awareness to the importance of sterilisation and population control in our domestic pets.
"Many of our dog children are also cancer survivors, or are currently fighting their cancer battle.
"Others are part of the group that support our cancer patients in their fight against cancer.
"The event is an exceptional opportunity for dog owners and their animal children to prove their solidarity against the disease.
"It forms part of the Cansa Relay for Life, but has its own place and time because it can not provide for animals for logistic reasons," said Cars chairperson, Sandra Lotz.
The event starts at 12:00 and animals can come together with their owners to the Riversdale Showground main entrance. A short program will follow, after which the animals will walk a short route around the 'obstacle course'.
Lucinda Viljoen from Cansa will also be present to answer questions.
Dog children always form part of a family, and they may have cancer or become a caregiver for a cancer patient in their battle.
Some of these dogs are also part of the community that does not always have the funds to sterilise their animals, which has a major influence on the prevention of cancer in animals.
Cars play a vital role in helping these communities with several sterilisation drives planned annually.
Your support helps to make these initiatives possible.
The Bark for Life fundraising day has something for the whole family.
Come and enjoy some delicious sweet treats and yummy snacks for sale in the tea garden, some craft stalls where you can browse and shop while the kids enjoy the jumping castle and other activities.
There will be the mini relay which you can enjoy with your dog(s), as well as the featured dog show which will have three exciting categories: Fancy Dress (dog and owner), Look-a-like (dog and owner) and Cutest Puppy (2–6 months).
Entry into the dog show will be R20 per category and each entry will get a special gift. There will be great prizes up for grabs to spoil your pooch. Entries can be made on the day.
Cars is also very involved in helping to re-home animals and facilitate adoptions of these animals.
"For that reason, we would also like to encourage anyone who has adopted a dog from Cars to bring your dog. This helps to raise awareness and will support our very important work with this initiative," said Lotz.
Everyone is invited to participate. Please ensure that all dogs are on leads for everyone's comfort and safety.
Gates open at 12:00 and entry fee is R5 per person. Any inquiries can be directed to Sandra Lotz on 082 962 1831, Junita Kleinhans on 082 495 5212 or Lucinda Viljoen on 082 66 33 529 or e-mail lucinda@cansa.org.za.
