WITSAND NEWS - The Lower Breede River Conservancy Trust is organizing the first of many beach clean-ups for the year.
Join them as they work towards trash free beaches and a healthier environment on Saturday 21 January from 09:00 until 11:00.
All will meet at the Anchorage Restaurant. Marzanne Carelse (Environmental Education Officer) says:
"Litter on our beaches has far reaching effects, not just for us as humans but also on all our sea animals and their habitats. If you want to help create cleaner beaches and lessen its effects, this is your chance. Bring sunscreen and a hat. Bags and gloves will be provided.
Marine debris, also known as marine litter, is human-created waste that has deliberately or accidentally been released into the sea or lake.
This is how long it takes for litter to break down and why it is considered a threat to the environment:
• Fine fishing line: at least 600 years (much longer for heavier nets)
• Foam cups and tin cans: 50 years
• Aluminium cans: at least 80 years
• Plastic bottles: 450 years
• Glass bottles: 1 million years
100,000 Turtles and marine mammals, such as dolphins, whales and seals, are killed by plastic marine litter every year around the world. One million seabirds are killed by marine litter every year.
