GOURITSMOND NEWS - Overfishing has led to a decline in the number of dusky kob - Argyrosomus japonicus or boerkabeljou in Afrikaans - at Gouritsmond and elsewhere along the South African coast.
According to Org Nieuwoudt, who runs a fishing charter, fewer dusky kob are being caught.
He believes the decline is a result of illegal fishing, a problem which is made worse by the lack of policing of illegal launch of boats at the slipway to the Gourits River estuary.
The number of fish caught is also not checked.
