RUGBY NEWS - New Zealand sent out a clear message that they intend to resurrect their strength in the abbreviated code as a one-sided 38-14 win over Argentina in the final secured them their first Cape Town Sevens title on Sunday.
The Kiwis have had a lean time of it in Sevens in recent seasons but they were the beaten finalists in the first leg of the 2017/2018 HSBC World Sevens Series in Dubai last week and this time went one better by winning the tournament after beating the hosts in a tight semifinal.
The Blitzboks, denied a chance of contesting their home final for the first time in several years, grabbed the consolation of securing the bronze medal as they beat plucky Canada 19-17 in the third/fourth playoff match.
The Blitzboks looked like they might beat Canada, who were the surprise package at the tournament and shocked Fiji on the first day, by a much bigger margin but the Canadians came back at them late in the game and the hosts were hanging on at the end.
