A 24-year-old woman who was rescued from a sex trafficking syndicate in Malaysia is now in the care of police while the Hawks probe the matter.
It is understood that Princess Mahlangu was lured to Malaysia to participate in a modelling competition which she entered on Facebook.
The Free State woman was then kept in that country against her will after the modelling competition was cancelled.
She later contacted her brother in South Africa, who alerted the authorities.
Police Minister Fikile Mbalula says several arrests have been made in Malaysia and there will be more here.
“There’s a girl who’s been Miss Glamour Free State, then there comes something called United Heritage and then she was recruited to go attend this pageant and there she landed in Malaysia with all other 14 kids there in Malaysia.”
Mbalula says he then informed Interpol and the Hawks to investigate the matter.
“Princess is our own child, a citizen of our country and we are very delighted to welcome her back home safely.”
He says that 14 other women were also rescued and returned to their home countries.
“I’m happy to report that our efforts to bring our girl home led to all the other potential victims being freed.”
