NATIONAL NEWS - The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) will have some explaining to do before Parliament after it announced on Thursday that it had offered a contract to the Post Office to pay social grants from next year.
On Wednesday, neither Sassa nor the Social Development Department pitched up to meetings they were supposed to attend to provide a status update on the takeover of social grant payments.
In an apology sent to the social development committee and the Standing Committee on Public Accounts, Sassa’s interim chief executive Pearl Bhengu said that there was no progress to report.
She suggested that the agency rather meet with the committees in November.
