Rick Erasmus and his wife, Hilmary, who run the Featherfoot Horse Ranch in Kabeljouws, were slammed on social media last week.
This was after pictures were shared to Facebook showing malnourished and dead horses on his property.
The pictures were taken at a rehabilitation farm 5km from Featherfoot in Jeffreys Bay.
The post, accompanied by 12 pictures of emaciated horses and the skeletal remains of others, was widely circulated.
Horse care unit manager Megan Hope said after an inspection on Tuesday that the Erasmuses were actually running a rehabilitation programme for drought-stricken Karoo horses. But the Humansdorp SPCA raided the farm on Thursday night, cutting through a fence to cart the horses off in a trailer.
Erasmus claimed that the animal protection society had yet to produce a court order permitting the confiscation of his rescued horses.
“I have asked several times to see the court order, but they tell me they have one but can’t find it.
