MOTORING NEWS - It is safe to say that a sign of true love is the willingness to put your life on the line for the one your heart belongs to.
A few months ago I wrote a piece about my "racy love affair" with my 2009 BMW 523i - a gem named Lord Business. I wrote about how it is very rare to find a secondhand vehicle that brings more joy than drawbacks.
When I bought my car five years ago, it was love at first sight - a love that's lasted and grown over the years. Together we've seen some of the most beautiful parts of the country, travelled great distances for work and visited friends and family all over South Africa. Every time I open the garage door, or see the headlights light up at the start of a journey, my heart beats faster. I've fallen hard for my metallic beauty.
On my way to work one morning with two colleagues, Lord Business returned my love in the ultimate way. As we were heading into Knysna from Plettenberg Bay, we hit traffic on a blind rise.
The morning traffic was backed up from the first traffic light in Knysna, up the hill towards Plett. We came to a standstill behind a Toyota Fortuner, but the driver of the vehicle behind us was distracted and did not see the backed-up traffic. In my rear view mirror, I saw the vehicle wasn't slowing down.
The impact of the crash sent Lord Businesses hurtling into the car in front of me. The headrest airbags deployed and so did the safety-belt features. All three of us got out of the car unscathed.
Compared to mine, the damage to the other vehicles confirmed I had made the right decision five years ago. Lord Business kept me and my travelling companions safe.
As I mentioned in my previous musings, when one loves, you do not hesitate to put in the effort to ensure that your other half receives the care he deserves.
I found that care at a local panel beater in Plett. Testament to the 5-series quality and safety features, there was no structural damage and, I kid you not, by the looks of things, hard to believe! After spending a few days in expert hands, Lord Business was discharged in tiptop condition.
Due to the lockdown regulations that discourage long-distance travelling, my metallic love and I have not been able to spend as much time together as I would like, but our love affair continues.
