HESSEQUA NEWS - The fire has been contained after swift wind changes and hot temperatures caused it to spread toward the N2 and the quarry situated next to the highway yesterday afternoon.
The strategic use of aerial resources assisted in securing the eastern and southern fire lines. Late last night GRDM firefighters implemented a back burn on the south-westerly corner of the fire line to contain this area and prevent further spread southwards and toward infrastructure. Assistance by an Albertinia farm watch bakkie unit assisted greatly.
Today's planning includes ground personnel patrolling and verifying the entire perimeter, as well as dealing with a hot line on the western side where access was limited. A firebreak was reinforced yesterday afternoon to ensure that this area is contained and that no fire can spread to infrastructure.
Importantly, no structures were under immediate threat and the placement of Hessequa and Garden Route District Municipality fire trucks ensured that this remained the case.
Garden Route District Municipality Community Services Portfolio Councillor, Jobieth Hoogbaard, who visited the site for oversight, extended his gratitude to all stakeholders and firefighters involved in firefighting efforts.
Stakeholders involved include Garden Route District Municipality, Hessequa Municipality Fire and Rescue Services, Working on Fire, the Southern Cape Fire Protection Association, and Albertinia Farm Watch Fire Volunteers.
If you spot a veld or wildfire, please report it immediately to the GRDM Emergency Call Centre at 044 805 5071 or via WhatsApp at 081 709 5193.
