Update
GARDEN ROUTE NEWS – The search for the 81-year-old Gerhardus ‘Gert’ David Hills from Knysna came to a tragic end last night, Wednesday 6 August, when his body was found in his vehicle down an embankment in the Kaaimans Pass, just past the Far Hills Hotel.
At this stage, the circumstances surrounding his death are unclear. Authorities have asked the public to refrain from speculation while the investigation continues.
The Hills family wishes to thank each person who contributed in any way, whether through searching, sharing information, offering support or simply keeping them in their thoughts and prayers.
The family requested privacy while they come to terms with their devastating loss. More details will be shared as they become available.
Weeks-long search effort
Hills, a well-known pigeon fancier, had been missing for nearly three weeks after leaving his home in Kamdebo Avenue, Old Place, on Friday 18 July to buy pigeon food in town.
Surveillance footage later tracked his silver-grey Nissan Juke from George to Mossel Bay and ultimately to the Little Brak River off-ramp on the N2 at about 19:00 that evening - his last confirmed sighting. He was believed to be on his way back towards George.
His disappearance prompted an extensive multi-agency search effort, involving law enforcement, private security companies, neighbourhood watches and community volunteers.
