Update
MOSSEL BAY NEWS: All residents in the fire-affected areas of Island View, Vakansieplaas, and Aalwyndal have been safely evacuated, as firefighting teams continue to battle the ongoing wildfire.
This is according to the Mossel Bay Municipality.
The municipality says two firefighters were injured during operations but are receiving medical care.
It says no civilian injuries have been reported.
A Joint Operations Centre (JOC) remains active, coordinating firefighting, evacuations, and humanitarian support.
Fire crews from Mossel Bay, Garden Route, Hessequa, and George, alongside volunteer services including NSRI, Volunteer Wildfire Services, and Community Policing Forum, are working tirelessly on fire lines through the night.
“A drone with infrared technology is assisting teams in identifying hotspots, while weather and wind conditions are being closely monitored,” the municipality said.
Traffic remains restricted in affected areas.
The municipality says multiple structures have been damaged, though final numbers are not yet confirmed.
For humanitarian support, donations should be directed to Mossel Bay Fire Station at the corner of Schoeman Street and Louis Fourie Road, and not to the fire scenes.
The JOC will reconvene at 07:00 on 7 January to assess the situation and provide the next update.
