GOURITSMOND NUUS - Intensive and tireless investigation by dedicated Albertinia detectives paid off when they arrested a person of interest in connection with the murder of 87-year-old retired reverend, John Peter Barnard of Gouritsmond.
Preliminary investigation reveals that Barnard's body was discovered on his kitchen floor by a neighbour on Sunday, 15 September at about 14:00.
The neighbour became suspicious when she had not seen him since Saturday afternoon when he was working in his garden.
Members from Albertinia police were dispatched to the scene where they discovered that the deceased sustained head injuries, which probably lead to his death. This was later confirmed during an autopsy.
Further information led the investigating team to a premises in Gouritsmond where they took a person of interest into custody to be interrogated. This person fit the description provided by witnesses who saw a strange man at the premises of the deceased.
The 33-year-old man has been charged with murder and is scheduled to appear in the Riversdale magistrates’ court tomorrow, Wednesday 18 September.
The investigation continues.
