GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - Of the 29 956 Covid-19 cases recorded in the Garden Route district since the outbreak last year, a total of 1 039 Covid deaths have been recorded. This is a 3,46% death rate.
According to Garden Route Disaster Management chief Gerhard Otto, there are 3 566 active cases in the district as of 10 January.
George has the most recorded active cases with 1 029. The city has recorded 345 Covid deaths to date.
The town with the second most recorded active cases is Mossel Bay with 765 (total deaths 178).
"There has been an increase in active cases per 100 000 for all sub-districts compared to one week ago, except for Bitou, which has decreased,” said Otto.
“Fortunately, the new cases in the last seven days have essentially not increased, compared with the previous seven to 14 days."
A total of 1 962 new cases were reported over the past seven days compared with 1 960 in the previous week.
The average cases per 100 000 of the population for the district is 577, which is slightly lower than the Western Cape average of 616.
Otto said George Hospital is still very busy. The busiest hospitals in the district are Oudtshoorn and Riversdale hospitals with both being under severe pressure. He said they are now working on writing a strategy for a Covid vaccine programme for healthcare workers in the district.
