NATIONAL NEWS - A suspect in the Murray murders in 2023 died in a hail of bullets outside the Netcare Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg last night.
In an exclusive scoop earlier today, Thursday, 2 October, News24 reported that a 45-year-old man from Alberton was siting in his car when he was killed in what looked like a planned hit.
News 24 reports that the team investigating the double murder of father and son Cloete and Thomas Murray on the N1 North in Johannesburg in March 2023, was looking for Burnett Benacoba Hermanus for questioning.
It could be that he was taken out to prevent the police questioning him.
According to News24 Hermanus was a prime suspect in the Murray murders.
No arrests have been made in connection with the murder of Hermanus last night.
Mafia state
In response to this latest assassination, DA MP, Adv Glynnis Breytenbach, says the hit on Hermanus is not an isolated incident.
"Daily assassinations, a captured police service, a prosecuting authority in disarray and the rise of a mafia state are all the byproducts of a criminal justice system in tatters.
"This comes as no surprise, as the ANC has spent decades destroying the rule of law in South Africa to protect its cadres."
In her statement released this afternoon, Breytenbach says the DA demands that the ministers of justice, correctional services, police and state security account for their departments' joint failures in curbing the rise of impunity and present a combined plan to save the South African criminal justice system.
"We afford these ministers until 31 October to present a plan that will address these failures and protect the rule of law.
"Should these ministers fail to come up with a tangible action plan by 31 October, the DA will write to the President and urge him to address these ministers' inaction in protecting the criminal justice system."
She says the criminal justice system can be fixed, but political will is crucial in finding a solution.
