NATIONAL NEWS - The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Western Cape has called for strengthened disaster preparedness following severe weather disruptions that affected the operations of the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) between 10 and 13 May.
Widespread flooding and infrastructure damage swept across parts of the province during this period, placing pressure on residents, businesses and essential public services.
Among those impacted were 10 Sassa offices and service points, where operations were disrupted due to power outages, structural risks and in some cases, temporary closures or relocations.
Areas affected included Caledon, Bredasdorp, Grabouw, Worcester, Bella Vista (Ceres), Riversdale, Plettenberg Bay, Ladismith, Beaufort West and Gouda.
Emergency measures keep services running
Despite the challenging conditions, Sassa officials worked to maintain access to critical social services for vulnerable communities.
Contingency plans were activated, including skeleton staffing, temporary relocations and outreach initiatives, ensuring that beneficiaries could still receive assistance where possible. Importantly, scheduled grant payment cycles continued without interruption.
In addition, emergency humanitarian relief to the value of R788 815 was distributed to communities affected by the floods.
DA highlights need for stronger disaster readiness
DA Western Cape spokesperson on Social Development, Wendy Kaizer-Philander, acknowledged the efforts of frontline officials during the crisis.
“The severe weather experienced across the Western Cape placed immense pressure on communities and public services alike. We acknowledge the efforts of the provincial Sassa officials who continued to support beneficiaries under difficult circumstances while adapting to rapidly changing conditions,” she said.
Kaizer-Philander emphasised that increasingly frequent extreme weather events require improved preparedness across all levels of government.
Lessons from disaster response
The recent disruptions have highlighted the importance of regularly reviewing disaster response plans and strengthening coordination between public institutions.
“As extreme weather events become more frequent, it is important that all spheres of government continue strengthening their preparedness and response capabilities,” Kaizer-Philander added.
She noted that each disaster presents an opportunity to improve systems, enhance coordination and build resilience to ensure essential services remain accessible.
Engagement planned to strengthen future response
The DA confirmed it will engage with Sassa and the national Department of Social Development to better understand the challenges experienced during the severe weather period.
The party aims to support efforts that will improve disaster preparedness and ensure continuity of services, particularly for the most vulnerable residents who rely on social assistance.
