MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Carpe Musicam!’s recipe of well-performed audience-friendly music, presented in a light-hearted way had concert-goers on their feet at performances in George and Sedgefield last weekend.
The concert, entitled “Classics from the Movies” was made up of a collection of music which was famous before it had been "hijacked into a movie sound-track" to quote conductor and presenter Norman Carless.
Most performed
Mozart was the most performed composer with his Turkish Rondo given full Samba treatment and an utterly gob-smacking pop/rock styled medley of themes from two of his symphonies – with a section of big band swing added for good measure.
The player’s dynamic range and technique were both given a thorough workout in this magical musical melange.
Carin Smit
Two highlights were Carin Smit’s heart-warming performance of the Out-Of-Africa-esque Adagio from Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto.
And regular violin soloist, Cherith Bain, beguiled and thrilled audiences with a very chatty and feisty version of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Arabian Night masterpiece, entitled “Scheherezade goes Latin”.
The choir were in absolute top form during “Goin’ Home” and “Summertime”, and the orchestral and choral finale was heart-stopping in its passion and volume.
