WESTERN CAPE NEWS - The Western Cape Department of Infrastructure (DOI) is confident that the road between Oudtshoorn and the Cango Caves (R328, TR75/2) should be open to traffic tomorrow, 7 June.
This is if no further rockfalls occur.
According to a Transport Infrastructure Damage Report issued by the DOI at 09:00 this morning, work is also progressing well on the road between Oudtshoorn and De Rust (N12, TR33/3).
Teams are busy with inspections on the water tunnel under the road and if the culvert did not suffer damage, then the team can start with backfilling.
The DOI says they are cautiously optimistic that this route, where the road broke in two when flood water took a wide section of the road with it, will also reopen tomorrow.
The widespread rain that has been falling in the province since 1 June has caused extensive damage to roads, property, farms and many people had to be rescued and evacuated from flooded areas. More rain is predicted for many areas in the province tomorrow.
Travel safely
DOI Minister Tertuis Simmers asks that road users obey all road signs. "They are there for very good reasons. If you are driving and come across flooded roads, please take great care. If the water is too deep for you to see the roadway, turn around and take another route.
Where roads are underwater, the roadway may have been damaged or washed away. There may be obstacles under the water you cannot see. Water flow may be strong enough to wash your vehicle away."
