Update
RIVERSDALE NEWS - Enkanini residents in Kwanokuthula who were left destitute after a fire destroyed their homes two weeks ago have finally started to rebuild their houses.
More than 20 informal structures were burnt down on Tuesday 27 March.
ANC Ward Councillor, Elias Dayimani, who is also assisting residents with rebuilding their homes said, "Living in shacks are already hard enough. These fires always come as a reminder that one must get out of here as this is no place to be settled in. People come to stay here because of desperation, but when they get here their dignity as a human being is degraded and after some time they get used to it.
"Then when everyone is settled, that's when electricity cuts, evacuations and shack fires come."
One of the residents said that they demand that the municipality give them houses. "We lost our homes, our privacy. I don't think this is fair, we want houses." Others asked for the community and municipality to provide them with material so they can rebuild their houses.
Currently, building materials are the prime need to get people into structures as soon as possible so that they can start rebuilding their lives.
