SWELLENDAM NEWS - Illegal firearms were found on the N2 highway near Swellendam on Monday, 1 March, by members of the Swellendam police.
The officers followed up information which led to the confiscation of a R1 rifle, a handgun, 105 R1 rounds of ammunition and three 9mm rounds.
They were on patrol at about 18:30 when they were alerted regarding a suspicious-looking bag seen by a member of the public next to the highway at Appelsbosch, a picnic spot. On arrival the police noticed a black sports bag. A search of the bag resulted in the discovery of the illegal firearms, firearm parts as well as ammunition.
An enquiry docket was opened for further investigation and the suspect who seemingly abandoned these items is yet to be arrested.
The police management thanked the member of the public who conveyed the important information to the police.
