STILBAAI NUUS - The annual Stilbaai Galjoen Derby will be held on 5 August.
This year the Stilbaai Angling Club will collaborate with Opulence Productions as the main organiser of the event. They will host the first derby since the onset of the lockdown restrictions which crippled this and many other events.
To make this first derby for a long time one to remember, the organisers have decided to add a few bonuses, amongst them renowned cover band CeeKay who will be performing at the prize-giving.
The derby aims to encourage the controlled sport of angling with an emphasis on the sustainability of the natural resources of the ocean and its surroundings.
Catch, weigh-in, measure and release is the main objective alongside the preservation of the galjoen population and the prevention of depletion of the biosphere and environment in which they inhabit.
Many young anglers benefit from this annual event, as the Stilbaai Angling Club is committed to teaching and training young anglers to reach their top performance in this sport, whilst letting them realise the importance of nature and the ocean's inhabitants.
The angling club also does some exemplary work with the Eden Shore Angling Project for the youth.
Not only does the Galjoen Derby benefit Stilbaai and its businesses and inhabitants, due to the vast number of entrants and their families, which gives the village a huge financial boost, but it also educates and encourages other anglers and the general public and clubs to do similar for their communities whilst enjoying the controlled sport of professional angling.
Added to the normal program will be stall space for the sponsors, which will be on display and manned on Friday 4 August when the entrants come to get their entry packs. Stalls will also be open on the day of the event on 5 August until the start of the gala prize-giving dinner.
To encourage youth involvement, the organisers are collaborating with local schools, hosting a Galjoen Derby Art Competition, with two divisions for primary and high school students.
Prizes for the top three artists in both divisions will be up for grabs and all the art entries will be on display on the day of the event.
An additional photo competition will also be held on the day where entrants can send in their top action photos of the day. The winner will be announced by the end of the following week.
Food truck stalls are welcome to join the event with space available for a minimal fee.
