GARDEN ROUTE DISTRICT NETBALL NEWS - As preparations are in full swing to host the 2023 Netball World Cup in the Western Cape, Sport, Arts and Culture MEC, Minister Anroux Marais, officially presented ceremonial cheques to municipalities to upgrade netball facilities in their regions.
Through the multiple engagements with the Western Cape Netball Federation to discuss the state and use of netball facilities within the Western Cape, the following facilities will be upgraded to contribute to the Netball World Cup 2023 Legacy project and these cheque handovers signify the funding allocated for the 2020/21 financial year:
In the Garden Route, to upgrade the Riversdale Stadium, Hessequa Municipality will receive R600 000; Knysna Municipality will also receive R600 000 to upgrade the Karatara sport facility; the Overberg District's Swellendam Municipality will receive R600 000 to upgrade the Powell and Kelly Sports Ground; and the Cape Agulhas Municipality will receive R800 000 to improve, among others, the lighting and surface of the Bredasdorp facility.
At the ceremonial cheque handover, Marais said, "As we safely move forward in the sector, the provisioning and upgrading of key facilities are critical components of sports development in the Western Cape, South Africa and the world at large.
"Sport facility provisioning and upgrades create an enabling environment for local, district, regional, provincial, national and even international sports events to take place with the aim of developing sporting talent at different levels as we now navigate to and through our new norm in the sector."
