NATIONAL NEWS - The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has confirmed that a criminal case has been opened against a former board member following the alleged theft of laptops earmarked for learners at six Eastern Cape high schools.
According to NSFAS, the former board member, who was leading the organisation’s delegation during the Eastern Cape Donation Drive in March 2026, allegedly kept 10 laptops instead of ensuring they were delivered to the identified schools.
The donation drive involved 30 laptops, with each of the six schools set to receive five devices for communal use.
NSFAS condemns alleged misuse of position
NSFAS Administrator Professor Hlengani Mathebula expressed shock at the allegations, saying the incident was particularly disturbing given the organisation’s mandate to support students and communities facing economic hardship.
“It is shocking that, particularly a board member of an organisation designed to alleviate hardships from economically deprived communities, would be responsible for such an act,” Mathebula said.
He welcomed the decision by NSFAS employees to pursue justice on behalf of the learners who were meant to benefit from the donated equipment.
Mathebula said wrongdoing can only continue when people choose not to act.
“Criminality can only thrive when witnesses turn a blind eye to such matters,” he said.
NSFAS commits to accountability
Mathebula said NSFAS must be associated with leaders and employees who uphold the highest standards of integrity.
He praised the employees who reported the matter, saying their actions demonstrate a commitment to restoring trust in the organisation.
He added that learners from disadvantaged backgrounds rely on support from institutions such as NSFAS and that using a position of privilege to deprive them of resources was unacceptable.
NSFAS said it has confidence in the South African Police Service (SAPS) to investigate the matter and ensure justice for the intended beneficiaries.
