The event was founded by Kevin Vermaak in 2004 at a time when there were no similar events in South Africa and the sport of mountain biking was in its infancy in the country.
Now in its 20th year, the Absa Cape Epic features 16 500m of climbing packed into 617km of racing at a rate of 27m of elevation gain per kilometre.
