SOUTHERN CAPE NEWS - The Eden Sport Council (EDENSC) hosted their annual Members Meeting last Thursday in the Conference Hall of the George Civic Centre.
A total of 38 sport federations and 74 delegates attended the meeting.
As part of their vision of honouring top performances, EDENSC embarked on the project of continually awarding accolades to sport persons who have excelled beyond the normal expectations.
The first of the Chairperson's Accolade (CA) were presented to three people. They were Elma Davis (Eden Bowls) for winning the SA Masters Ladies Championships; Billy Radloff (Eden Bowls) for winning the SA Masters Men Championship and Minke Janse van Rensburg (swimming - sport for special needs) for her meteoric rise and setting a number of SA, Africa and world records.
Elma and Billy are the first ever bowlers to bring back these titles to Eden. Desmond Speelman, chairperson of EDENSC, presented the awards.
Two new co-opted members of the EXCO were also introduced: Elma Davis (athletes representative) and Michelle Behrens (chairperson: Colours Commission).
Speelman also thanked the outgoing athletes representative, Kittie Terblanche, on her unselfish contribution towards sport in Eden.
EDENSC can boast two finalists for the SA Sport Awards on 11 November in Johannesburg - Minke Janse van Rensburg (sport for special need persons) in the category of Newcomer of the Year and Surfer Kids (Lifesaving NPO of Mossel Bay) in the category Recreation Sport Body of the Year.
In his report, Jean Neethling of The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) mentioned that no less than 19 major events funded by DCAS were hosted in Eden. The chairperson unequivocally stated that the official name of Eden Sport Council will not be affected by the new name of the Garden Route DM at present. So far 43 of the 51 affiliated federations are functioning under the Eden name.
