Despite De Villiers not playing in Tests since the last rankings update, Australia’s Steve Smith dropped from top spot after getting out cheaply in both innings in his side’s defeat to England in the opening Ashes Test in Cardiff.
The South African ODI captain now leads the Test rankings on 908 points, eight ahead of Smith. Proteas Test captain Hashim Amla was third in the batting rankings with 891 points. The Proteas, meanwhile, retained their number-one ranking in Test cricket. South Africa are way ahead on 130 points, with Australia second on 111.
In ODI cricket, South Africa are fourth on 111 where the Aussies enjoy top spot on 129. In T20 cricket, South Africa are down in sixth with Sri Lanka perched at the summit in the shortest format of the game.
