NATIONAL NEWS - Five South African women appeared before the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court yesterday, facing charges related to drug trafficking following their arrest at OR Tambo International Airport, reports Kempton Express.
The arrests were made on Saturday during a joint operation between the SAPS and Airports Company South Africa.
According to SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk, the accused were found in possession of drugs with an estimated street value exceeding R5m, concealed on their bodies.
“A preliminary investigation indicates that the suspects were en route to China via Dubai,” said Van Wyk.
Police reportedly discovered the drugs hidden in the accused sneakers, underwear and private parts during a search.
The five accused appeared wearing black masks and sunglasses. The presiding magistrate requested that they remove their sunglasses during proceedings.
Due to being arrested at different times, the accused are facing separate charges and their matters have been split.
Vuyokazi Toko, Zodwa Mthombeni and Nemukondeni Mulweli Precious had their case postponed to April 8 for a formal bail application.
Dayimani Nomgcisa and Shikwambane Elisa Thuli are expected to return to court on April 9 for their formal bail application.
