NATIONAL NEWS - The Department of Basic Education have set four levels of achievement or different pass levels for matric learners: Bachelors pass, Diploma pass, Higher certificate pass and a National senior certificate pass.
Out of the 2023 matric class, 40,9% achieved a Bachelor’s pass, 27,2% a Diploma pass, 14,8% a Higher certificate pass and 17,1% a National senior certificate (NSC) pass.
The different pass levels greatly influence your options after matric, with a straightforward NSC severely limiting your higher education options.
Minimum Bachelor’s degree pass requirements
Provisional entrance into university or degree course.
- 40% for home language
- 50% for four other high credit subjects (excluding Life Orientation)
- At least 30% for two other subjects
- Must pass 6 out of 7 subjects
Minimum Diploma pass requirements
Provisional entrance into any university of technology.
- 40% for home language
- 40% for four other high credit subjects (excluding Life Orientation)
- 30% for two other subjects
- Must pass 6 out of 7 subjects
Minimum Higher certificate pass requirements
Provisional entrance to any college or certificate course.
- 40% for home language
- 40% in two other subjects
- 30% for three other subjects
- Must pass 6 out of 7 subjects
NB: To qualify for a Higher Certificate students are required to have English or Afrikaans as their home language.
National Senior Certificate (NSC) pass requirements
Students who pass with an NSC will not be able to study at any of the above institutes of higher learning. Therefore, it’s vital that students work hard and avoid passing with only an NCS.
- 40% for home language
- 40% for two other subjects
Students can fail a subject, but must get at least 30% for six other subjects. Students are required to have an average of 33,5% to qualify for an NSC pass.
