MOSSEL BAY - Thousands of athletes are gathering in Mossel Bay today for the ISUZU IRONMAN 70.3 triathlon race.
Participants started the race of this morning at 06:30 with a 1.9km swim at Santos Beach.
They will then proceed with a 90km bike ride and finish of with a 21km run.
The event is also an economic booster for the town.
According to Ironman project manager, Werner Smit each Ironman participant gets accompanied by at least three people, drawing more than 7 500 visitors to Mossel Bay.
Mossel Bay Mayor Dirk Kotze says Mossel Bay will host the event for the next three years.
Last year the event boosted the town’s economy with more than R50 million.
