NATIONAL NEWS - Following the signing into law of the controversial NHI bill by the president yesterday, the equally controversial Bela Bill on education was passed in National Assembly this morning.
Minister David Maynier, Provincial Education Minister in the Western Cape, said that the Western Cape Government strongly oppose the Basic Education Laws Amendment (Bela) Bill.
“The bill erodes the powers of governing bodies, takes powers away from provinces, followed a procedurally flawed process and is unaffordable. We will be writing to President Cyril Ramaphosa to raise serious concerns about the constitutionality of the bill with a view to have the bill referred back to the National Assembly for reconsideration in terms of section 79 of the constitution.”
