HERBERTSDALE NEWS - On Monday, 7 August, two boys, both aged 17, appeared in the Mossel Bay Magistrate's Court on charges of murder after an attack on a 30-year-old man in Herbertsdale, near Mossel Bay.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Kappie Kapp said investigations indicated the attack on the Herbertsdale resident took place on Friday, 4 August, at 22:00 in Skool Street.
According to reports there was an altercation between the two minors and residents of Herbertsdale, which led to the alleged assault with a panga on the victim. He was taken to Mossel Bay Provincial Hospital, but died of his injuries on Sunday, 6 August.
The two minors have been in custody since their arrest and were to appear in the Mossel Bay Magistrate's Court again on Thursday, 10 August.
The police investigating officer is WO Geoffrey Moos and information which could help in the case can be directed to him (044 606 5633).
Daniel Tintinger, principal of Herbertsdale Primary School, was the first to tell Mossel Bay Advertiser about the incident.
The Advertiser then enquired to the police about the crime.
Social ills
He expressed his sadness at social ills in Herbertsdale and the high school dropout rate of children who came from Herbertsdale.
He noted that the two minors involved in the incident had attended Herbertsdale Primary School.
Tintinger said there was a drug abuse problem in Herbertsdale and this resulted in the social ills.
Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) established a vegetable garden at Herbertsdale Primary School for Mandela Month in July.
In a media statement to the Advertiser, TNPA said it had chosen the school specifically as its beneficiary because it wished to uplift the school and the area through the vegetable garden.
It noted that there was social dysfunction in Herbertsdale.
Tintinger said a Herbertsdale resident died in a fire during the June/July school holidays.
He had been living rough, in makeshift accommodation, and had made a fire at night and had burnt to death. The Advertiser awaits official confirmation from the police.
