STILBAAI NEWS - Have you got what it takes to be part of a NSRI rescue team?
The NSRI, Sea Rescue will now be offering a Full Time Rescue Course for sea going rescue crew. The same material and sea time as a full time course will be completed in an intensive two week period.
Closing date for applications is 5 June.
The first course will be held in Stilbaai (with day trips to NSRI-rescue bases in Witsand and Mossel Bay) during the June July school holidays. It will take place form 25 June to 7 July.
These courses will be sponsored and, for this reason, formal applications will need to be made by candidates. Foreign students who would like to participate, may be accepted but will not qualify for sponsorship and will need to pay the full course fee of R6 800. NSRI anticipate a high demand for this course and there is limited space.
This course is for sea going crew, so candidates should feel comfortable in the water, should be willing to learn boating skills and become part of a dynamic team.
Modules include basic seamanship, rope work, pyrotechnics, collision regulations, basic radio work, emergency procedures, practical scenario planning and interpersonal skills.
At the end of each day everyone will join in to wash down the boat, refuel and repack the equipment. The daily schedule will be dependent on weather and sea conditions but the classes will run for 8 hours a day with some nights required for night training and optional “movie nights” on some of the evenings. There will be no class on Sundays.
This pace suits many of our volunteers who have careers and families. It usually takes around 6 months to complete the theory and practical syllabus for our sea going rescue crew.
Graduates of these courses will qualify for a Sea Rescue crew badge and will be invited to join an NSRI rescue base in their area as a Sea Rescue volunteer.
The purpose of this course is to invest in communities and to provide an opportunity for new crew to join and get up to speed in a shorter period of time. This pace may be well suited to students and learners but anyone who can commit to the two weeks is welcome.
