ALBERTINIA NEWS - The mother of a boy (9) was arrested after she was accused of intoxicating her son with cheap wine.
The mother (32) appeared in the Riversdale Magistrates' court on Monday 16 October.
Albertinia Police opened a Child Abuse and Neglect-case for investigation against the mother after the grandmother alerted them about the ordeal the child went through whilst visiting his mother in Gouritsmond.
"Preliminary investigation reveals that the child has been living with his grandmother in Mossel Bay since he was only three weeks old.
"The grandmother decided to return the child to his mother who resides in Gouritsmond on 5 October, as she did not contribute towards the financial support of the child," said Capt Malcolm Pojie, Media Liaison Officer, South Cape.
Last week a friend of the grandmother informed her that the child had been admitted to the Mossel Bay hospital for medical treatment after being intoxicated and having convulsions as a result thereof.
It was then reported that the mother twice provided the child with alcohol to drink. It is further alleged that the child was seldom fed.
Subsequently, the mother was arrested over the weekend and detained at the local holding cells.
The investigation continues.
