HESSEQUA NEWS - Stranded marine animals should not be approached or handled by the public.
This was Jean du Plessis from CapeNature's advice when asked by South Cape Forum about the right way to treat animals such as penguins and seals found on beaches. Seals can deliver a nasty bite when they feel threatened, while penguins can easily die from stress if picked up by humans.
According to Du Plessis it is easy to mistake resting for distress: "Marine animals are made for water and they look lethargic on land. Sometimes they leave the water simply to rest for a while."
The best thing to do when any beached creature is spotted is to observe from a safe distance and phone Du Plessis as soon as possible. Penguins will be fetched and taken to a rehabilitation centre.
Bigger animals will be assessed and treated accordingly. Du Plessis's contact number is 082 496 2522.
