HESSEQUA NEWS - Former ANC councillor, Ivan Mangaliso from Albertinia, who resigned from the ANC on 8 September, will be the Hessequa mayoral candidate for the Patriotic Alliance (PA) in the local election on 1 November.
Mangasilo told South Cape Forum that during his term as councillor he had brought many challenges to the attention of the ANC leadership, but had never received any response.
He no longer agreed with the ANC's principals or how the party conducts itself. "The ANC has lost its moral compass. By association we [ANC councillors] are part of the perception people have of the organisation."
This will be the first election that the PA will contest in Hessequa, but Mangaliso is convinced that the Patriotic Alliance will make huge inroads in the district's political landscape.
Because he is a pastor, community developer actively involved with local libraries and a highly visible councillor, not only in Albertinia but in the entire Garden Route, Mangaliso stands a good chance of making the PA the kingmaker in the region in the local election, as may also be the case in Johannesburg. In May the DA lost two key wards to the PA in Eldorado Park by-elections in the City of Gold.
Council track record
Mangaliso served as the Ward Councillor for Ward 2 (Albertinia) and also represented Hessequa Municipality as the designated councillor for the Garden Route District Municipality.
He was the Chairperson of Hessequa’s Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC), as well as a member of both the Corporate Management and Community Development Portfolio Committees.
He also served on the following committees:
- Albertinia Business Chambers
- Libraries and Museums
- Albertinia “Versorgingsdienste”
- Albertinia Primary Health Care Facilities Committee (Clinics)
- Albertinia Policing Forum (SCTA and GOKOK)
- Consolidated Pension Fund (CRF) ( Secundi)
- Local Authority Retirement Fund (LARF) (Secundi)
- SALA Pension Fund (Secundi)
- Pension Fund for Councillors (Security)
- SAMWU Voorsorgfonds (Secundi)
- Eden District Health Forum (Secundi)
Mangaliso's resignation means a vacancy has arisen on Hessequa Municipality’s Council, but according to Municipal Manager Johan Jacobs, a by-election for Ward 2 will not be scheduled since the Local Government Election on 1 November is just six weeks away.
Hessequa Mayor Grant Riddles thanked Mangaliso for his service on behalf of Council and wished him well for the future.
