HESSEQUA BUSINESS NEWS - After they experienced some bat problems, the husband and wife team – Oliver and Charlene Heckerodt - did some research and after some brainstorming, started the Monarch Mosaics Business.
Bats are super little critters and often wrongly vilified – they keep the mosquito population nicely under control and complement your garden wildlife perfectly. They are unobtrusive and not harmful to you or your pets and contrary to popular belief – have no interest in getting entangled in your hair.
Having twenty years mosaic experience they decided to build houses for bats. They sell the mosaic house for R650 each and the plain house for only R350. Bat boxes are a great way to provide housing for our winged friends. These boxes are slim and unobtrusive. Each box can accommodate up to 100 bats and will also stop them from setting up house in your eaves. The size of the bat boxes are 400 x 600 cm and it is very easy to install them.
About 70% of all bats eat insects - flies, mosquitoes, beetles and cockroaches. Bats are also responsible for pollinating trees, flowers and cacti. They spread seeds so plants grow in new areas. These remarkable mammals live in sophisticated colonies and each can eat half its weight in insects a night, so they are great at controlling large numbers of pests that harm crops and spread disease. Certain micro organisms found in bat droppings may have important medical uses for humans. Encouraging bats to live on your property is a great idea, especially if you have a problem with insects. If you are keen to entice these little creatures - a bat house is the best option. Bat boxes need to be located under the eaves of your house in a north westerly direction, as these creatures require some warmth.
