NATIONAL NEWS - The country's top multisport athletes will descend on Hoekwil this Saturday, 11 July, when the South African Duathlon Championships return to the Garden Route for the second consecutive year.
Hosted by Eden Triathlon in partnership with Chain Gang Events, the national championships are proudly supported by George Municipality and George Tourism, highlighting George as a premier destination for major sporting events and active outdoor lifestyles.
Athletes from across South Africa will compete on the challenging Hoekwil course in a full day of racing that caters for competitors of all ages and abilities, from junior and para athletes to age-group competitors and the country's elite duathletes.
Racing starts at 08:00, with the final sprint events expected to conclude at approximately 16:00.
The championship programme includes seven race categories.
The long-distance event comprises a 15 km run, a 60 km cycle and a 7.5 km run, while the standard-distance race covers a 10 km run, a 40 km cycle and a 5 km run. Sprint and super sprint events will also be contested, providing opportunities for junior, para and recreational athletes to compete alongside South Africa's best.
Spectators are encouraged to base themselves at Hoekwil Primary School, where they can enjoy the race atmosphere while supporting local food vendors and coffee stalls.
Beyond the racing, the event provides visitors with an opportunity to experience everything the George area has to offer.
From the forests and lakes of Wilderness to the mountain scenery surrounding Hoekwil and the region's beaches, restaurants, outdoor adventures and world-class golf courses, athletes and supporters are encouraged to extend their stay and explore the destination.
The partnership between George Municipality, George Tourism and the organisers forms part of a shared commitment to growing sport tourism in the region by attracting national events that benefit local businesses and showcase the Garden Route to visitors from across the country.
