The spokesperson for the Mossel Bay police, Warrant Officer Pieter Koekemoer, said their investigation has indicated that it is merely a rumour, but he nevertheless warned parents to pay attention to their children's whereabouts at all times.
"Your child should be taught from a very young age what his home address and telephone number is, and should be able to recite this detail. Also, teach your children not to be too trusty of strangers.
A child should never approach a strange vehicle and never, ever accept lifts from anyone without your prior approval. They should also be warned not to walk too close to the curb and, if possible, not to walk alone.
"Children should know that you will never allow them to accept sweets of gifts from a stranger," he added.
He warned parents to be vigilant about their children's friends and to ensure that they have their names and contact details available. "You may as well have the contact details for the parents of your child's friends as well."
Children should also not be allowed to use their cellphones when walking, as it is an easy opportunity for theft.
When children are allowed to visit friends or to attend functions after hours, ensure that you know exactly where they will be going, and have them supply you with the telephone number of an adult if and where possible.
