INTERNATIONAL NEWS - The internationally renowned South African artist, Portchie (Jan Hendrik Viljoen) passed away today, 12 June, at the age of 62.
The cause of his death has not been made public, but it is believed to be due to heart failure.
His family and friends announced the news with deep sadness on Portchie's official Facebook page, describing him as a beloved brother, mentor and friend.
Portchie was a highly successful and popular artist known for his joyful, colourful paintings full of movement and emotion - especially his flowing trees, figures and vibrant scenes.
He was based in Stellenbosch, exhibited internationally (including Trafalgar Square), and built a big following through originals, prints and merchandise.
The family post says his spirit, inspiration and colourful legacy will live on through his art.
