NATIONAL NEWS - The National Consumer Commission informs consumers about the recall of Spraymate Cold Galvanising Spray Paint as notified by Rust-Oleum South Africa.
The spray is mainly used to protect steel products from rust and corrosion.
The affected products were made available for sale nationwide and exported to neighbouring countries, including Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe.
According to Rust-Oleum South Africa, certain batches may contain a defective seam weld on the canister body.
This defect is caused by a manufacturing irregularity during the production process.
Under specific conditions, the compromised seam may fail to uphold the necessary internal pressure integrity, thereby increasing the risk of an unexpected and uncontrolled discharge of the aerosol canister's contents.
Should the defective seam weld fail, the aerosol container may experience a loss of pressure integrity during standard use, potentially resulting in an unexpected and forceful discharge of its contents.
Documented incidents have indicated that this can lead to the product being expelled uncontrollably, affecting the user or the surrounding areas. This defect poses a physical risk, including potential contact with the eyes or skin, and may cause damage to nearby property or surfaces.
The recall affects the following batches:
- Batch 2116 – Production Date: 9 May 2025 | Expiry Date: 9 May 2030
- Batch 2223 – Production Date: 2 July 2025| Expiry Date: 2 July 2030
- Batch 2381 – Production Date: 9 September 2025| Expiry Date: 9 September 2030
Consumers in possession of the affected products are urged to immediately stop using them and return them to a point of purchase for a refund or a replacement.
The supplier will also, where applicable, cover costs associated with returning the product.
