Op die vraag hoekom hy so lank geneem het om te besluit om 'n boek te skryf antwoord hy: "My vriendin is die een wat my inspireer het, want sy het vir my gesê ek het so 'n volledige scrapbook van al die jare waarom skryf ek nie 'n boek oor my lewensverhaal nie? En ek het gedink waarom nie." Hy was 80 jaar oud toe hy afgetree het as besigheidsman en drie jaar later is die boek voltooi. Die boek handel oor sy loopbaan as besigheidsman, fluitjie blaser en hoe hy gevorder het tot toetsskeidsregter.
Op die voorblad van die boek is 'n foto van die 35jarige Baise en dit is geneem halftyd tydens die derde toets in 1967 op Ellispark in die wedstryd tussen die Franse en die Springbokke. Die boek is 'n volledige samevatting van Baise se lewe - en baie interessant met foto's wat jou 'n terugblik gee.

He made an indelible impression on friend and foe, even though he did not escpe his fair share of mistakes as an international referee.
Max could likely be describled as one of the more colourful personalities of the era - as player, coach, selector and referee. The manner in which he became a referee, or Mr Ref as he was called, almost seems stranger than fiction. Max is a man who jumped at an opportunity, the career of refereeing came about coincidentally and he completed his journey with the same passion that he started out with. This memoir underscores the validity of Max's honorary title as Mr Ref.
It was a privilege to accompany Max on the memorable road of recording his life story, which is a South African rugby story, but also a note on the important role played by the Jewish community in South Africa. In Max's case, the contribution has been of considerable value.

Max was a strong referee. That meant that the players enjoyed playing when he refereed and spectators enjoyed the match all the more with his ability to focus on what counted. Asked once what he looked for at a line-out, Max said: "I don't look for anything. I watch the game and believe what I see."
Max was much respected but then he gave respect. He prepared so thoroughly for his match, right up to the time he went onto the field that his respect for what he was doing was obvious and the way he conducted himself after the game was quiet and respectful. Max never tried to be grand - he just was, really was, the greates referee in my time.
