GARDEN ROUTE | HESSEQUA | KAROO NEWS - To date, the Garden Route has recorded 17 Covid-19 deaths, 11 of which were in George.
According to Western Cape Health district spokesperson Nadia Ferreira, three patients succumbed to the disease in George during the past week.
As of today, Wednesday 24 June, the Garden Route has recorded 754 positive Covid-19 cases of whom 324 have recovered. George has recorded a total of 388 cases of whom 138 have recovered.
Garden Route Disaster Management Chief Gerhard Otto has appealed to citizens to practise social distancing and stick to the required hygiene protocols. One of the Covid-19 command centre's biggest challenges is people who are infected with the coronavirus who do not self-isolate.
In an interview with local radio station EdenFm this week he warned that the rate of infection in the district has increased sharply.
He said the seriousness of the disease is reflected in a death rate of 18% among those hospitalised for Covid-19 in the Western Cape. Out of those admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU) in the province, 44% had succumbed to the disease.
