RIVERSDALE NEWS & VIDEO - Hessequa Municipality partnered with the local table tennis club as well as the Western Cape Table Tennis Federation to host the first ever Western Cape Inter-Regional Tournament in Riversdale on Friday and Saturday, 14 and 15 September.
This was both a first for the province as well as for the town.
At the opening of the event, Speaker Andrew Stroebel explained the Hessequa Municipality's deep commitment to sports development as a means to provide youth with alternative development and opportunities.
The tournament was attended by the best table tennis players from all corners of the province, including the City of Cape Town, Garden Route (Eden), West Coast and the Cape Winelands.
The current South African u.15 champion from Cape Town lead his team to a gold medal in the boy's section.
Cape Town junior teams dominated the event and took all the gold medals, the West Coast- and Garden Route teams put up a good fight and both managed to win four silver and four gold medals each.
In the u.18 and senior events, Cape Winelands came in strong with three silver and one bronze medal.

The strong Garden Route men's team only manage bronze, after winning the event year.
A provincial table tennis coordinating structure was elected and launched, that will in future oversee table tennis in the province. The Western Cape Table Tennis Federation will support all forms of the game.
They invite all schools, clubs and other stakeholders that are interested to join hands with them in managing the Western Cape which is the top table tennis playing province in South Africa.
