FOOTBALL NEWS - When the Lawaaikamp rivals Black Cats and Simunye face each other, it is always a great clash that has their supporters on the edge of the seats. It was no different on Saturday afternoon, 11 February, when Black Cats defeated Simunye 1-0 in a nail-biting derby game at the Lawaaikamp Stadium.
The single goal was an own goal scored by Simunye's Philani Kunene for Black Cats.
So far, Black Cats are second on the Safa Eden Regional Men's League log table, after playing fourteen fixtures with 10 victories, three draws and one defeat, while Simunye are fighting their way up to the top five.
Xolani Mandla, the Black Cats skipper, had an exceptional game and created several opportunities for his teammates, but Simunye's defenders kept their shape and remained solid at the back line.
In scorching temperatures, the Lawaaikamp derby got off to a good start with Black Cats launching the first attack on the left side of the field. Simunye soaked up the pressure very well, controlling the game from the centre of the field with combination passes and playing the ball on the ground.
Black Cats wingers relied heavily on the speed of Melisizwe Mbomvana, Xolani Mandla and Amimu Hussein up front, but couldn't break through Simunye's defence. A free kick and a throw-in for Black Cats both failed to result in a goal and the first half ended with no score.
The second half saw Simunye building their passes from the back line, trying to open up some space. The game however only sprang to life after both teams made their substitutions, inspiring their teams to more offensive play.
Black Cats brought in Keathon van Rooyen to replace Luthando Ntloko, while Simunye exchanged Asenathi Ndleleni for Pule Masoa.
It was a disappointing moment for Simunye when their defender Philani Kunene scored an own goal for Black Cats from a set piece just outside the box in the last minutes, giving the victory - and maximum points - to Black Cats.
